Nissan and Honda Join Forces to Develop Next-Generation SDV Software

Nissan Motor and Honda Motor have signed a joint development agreement to standardize multiple electronic control units (ECUs) at the heart of next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The partnership also covers the in-vehicle operating system, key middleware components, and vehicle control software running on these ECUs.

Both automakers plan to adopt the jointly developed E/E architecture, ECUs, and software in their next-generation SDVs starting in fiscal year 2029.

Strategic Background & Objectives

This initiative builds on the strategic partnership between Nissan and Honda as they explore broader collaboration to accelerate progress toward carbon neutrality and zero traffic fatalities. Given the rapid pace of technological innovation, the software domain especially SDV technology, is critical to vehicle intelligence and electrification. Both companies recognized that joining forces in this area is essential to boost R&D speed, optimize investment efficiency, and sharpen their competitive edge.

Following extensive joint studies on software collaboration, Nissan and Honda agreed to standardize these foundational technologies. Under the agreement, they will establish shared specifications for core ECUs, the in-vehicle OS, and key parts of the middleware and control software.

By unifying these core components, Nissan and Honda aim to combine their engineering expertise and resources, lowering development costs and achieving greater economies of scale. Moving forward, both companies will continue leveraging their individual strengths while deepening their collaboration to deliver value to customers and society. In addition to this, you can check out the latest car news by visiting Motory Cars News section.
