The Volkswagen Felicity Ace sank in the Atlantic Ocean on March 1, 2022, after being hit by rough waves, as the cargo vessel remained in the ocean nearly two weeks after a fire broke out on board.
The Felicity Ace sank 354 km (220 nautical miles) off the coast of Portugal’s Azores Islands, and the vessel was carrying about 4,000 vehicles made by Volkswagen Group - including Audis, Porsches, Bentleys, and Lamborghinis - from Germany’s Emden port to the American Rhode Island state when the fire broke out on February 16, 2022.
"The Felicity Ace sank 220 nautical miles off the coast of Portugal’s Azores Islands around 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday after being battered by waves and leaning 45 degrees to its starboard side", the ship’s operator said.
According to Automotive News Europe, the 4,000 cars belong to Volkswagen brands and luxury car manufacturers, with the number of their cars Approximately to be as follows:
- Audi : 1,900 car
- Porsche : 1,100 car
- Volkswagen : 500 car
- Bentley : 189 car
- Lamborghini : 85 car
On Tuesday, Volkswagen declined to comment. The German automaker was worried that a large number of its vehicles on board would be unsalvageable, with brands and dealers informing consumers that automobiles heading for the United States were unlikely to arrive. Last Monday, the company stated that the automobiles' damage is covered by insurance.
Russell Group, a risk-modeling firm, projected last week that the incident might cost the automaker at least $155 million if all of the vehicles were lost. The ship had a cargo value of $438 million, with automobiles totaling $401 million.
