In September 28, Google held a very important event “Google Search On 22” in which the company discussed the latest updates for Google Maps, and these updates included many features that serve a wide variety of needs. And in order to provide sustainable solutions for the climate change issue, Google launched a smart feature that will support this cause.
Google Maps Eco-Friendly Routing
In this event, Google announced the expansion of "Eco-Friendly Routing" to 40 countries throughout Europe, as this feature was first introduced in USA and Canada a year ago, and the company claimed that this feature reduced the percentage of car emissions, as if 100,000 cars were taken off the roads. This feature, Eco-Friendly Routing, helps the drivers find the best route to drop down the fuel consumption rate, and not only that, it also has route options for EV drivers to save more energy, and all the users can use it to find the best route through following the little green leaf symbol that represents the "greenest" route.
All they have to do is enable this feature on the Maps app through Settings by clicking on Route Options, and then turn on the Prefer fuel-efficient routes.
It is worth noting that these routes are not the shortest ones, but they will help with reducing carbon emissions.
Google also announced that it will add other updates to the Eco-Friendly Routing, like the ability to choose the type of engine (Gas, Diesel, Hybrid, Electric), that way the system will assess the user’s data and show the best route for this car and its engine.
In the Search On 22 event, Google mentioned other updates that will support the Eco-Friendly Routing, like displaying the annual fuel and energy prices, also, the emissions estimates for your car compared to others.
Other companies that use Maps as a main source for directions in their work will also have access to Eco-Friendly Routing in their own apps.
