In a strategic move that redefines automotive collaboration, Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors have unveiled plans to develop their first five joint vehicles, strengthening their position in the U.S. market and opening new horizons for innovation and quality.
First 5 Joint Vehicles Under Development
The two companies will co-develop four vehicles for the Central and South American markets, including a compact SUV, car and pick-up, as well as a mid-size pick-up, all offering the flexibility to use either internal combustion or hybrid powertrains. In addition, Hyundai and GM are working together to develop an electric commercial van for the North American market.
Sales Expectations and Production Scope
The companies expect sales of the co-developed vehicles to exceed 800,000 units annually once full-scale production is reached. GM will lead the development of the mid-size truck platform, while Hyundai will focus on the compact vehicle and electric van, with shared platforms and unique interior and exterior designs consistent with each brand.
Vehicle Launch and Production Timeline
Design and engineering work on the new vehicles for the Central and South American markets is currently underway, with launches scheduled for 2028. The electric commercial van will be manufactured in the U.S. early the same year. This timeline reflects the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles that meet customer expectations, as emphasised by the executives.
José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said:
“Hyundai’s strategic collaboration with GM will help us continue to deliver value and choice to our customers across multiple vehicle segments and markets.”
“Our combined scale in North and South America helps us to more efficiently provide our customers more of what they want – beautifully designed, high-quality, safety-focused vehicles with technology they appreciate," he added.
Shilpan Amin, GM senior VP and global chief procurement and supply chain officer, said:
"The vehicles announced today were targeted at the largest segments in the Central and South American markets, as well as the commercial segment in North America."
“By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster, and at lower cost,” Amin said. “These first co-developed vehicles demonstrate how GM and Hyundai will leverage our complementary strengths and combined scale," he added.
Sustainability and Innovation in Future Propulsion Techs
The two companies plan joint initiatives for sourcing materials, transportation, and logistics in North and South America, covering raw materials, components, and complex systems.
They have also agreed to explore collaboration on low-carbon steel as part of their commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
Following the signing of a framework agreement in September 2024, the companies continue to assess additional joint vehicle development programs for global markets, as well as collaboration opportunities across propulsion systems, including internal combustion engines, hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.
This reflects their commitment to delivering advanced and sustainable mobility solutions that meet the needs of markets and customers.
